Fun at the Eridge Alternative WI !

Eridge WI, East Sussex, near Crowborough. vintage 1940's Hair & make up

In April I was invited along to the newly started up, Eridge Alternative WI, which is situated half way between Crowborough, East Sussex and Tunbridge Wells, Kent. I was asked to do a demonstration of 1940’s hair along with  The Beauty Aisle, who would  demonstrate 1940’s make up. We both jumped at the chance to firstly, visit a WI for the first time and secondly, to have fun with 1940’s hair and make up. We were pleasantly surprised to find a lovely group of about 35 ladies ageing from about 20-70 years old meeting to socialise, learn and have fun (and of course to have tea and cake!!)

Hannah, president of the Eridge WI, asked Ellie and I to give them ideas for their ‘Land Girls’ themed stand at The Heathfield Show coming up on the 25th May 2013 at 8am -5pm

I was first up, curling my models hair ready to put into vintage rolls and a bun at the back. I used a curling wand to create the base for my rolls, then plenty of back combing and good old hairspray. In the 1940’s ladies would have to set their hair in rollers, and pin curls over night, kept in place with a hair net.

The make up was applied beautifully, accentuating lips and eyebrows as they did in those days.

After the demonstration, I played around with some of the ladies hair, giving them ideas of what they could achieve with their own hair, ready for the Heathfield Show.

Overall, it was a fun evening of learning, chatting, laughter, making new friends, eating home made cake and drinking tea in pretty mismatch china. Hannah would to have you join them so do go along!

How about some lovely finger waves like this for your wedding hair style!

The Marcel Wave (sometimes spelt Marcelle) is a stylish wave given to the hair by means of heated curling irons. Named for Francois Marcel, 19th century French hairdresser who invented the process in 1872. It revolutionized the art of hairdressing all over the world and remained in vogue for over fifty years, making a fortune for Mr Marcel. Originally known as the “Undulation Marcel”, the name evolved to the “Marcel Wave”.

Finger waves were developed in the 1920s to add style to, and soften the hard appearance of, the bobbed hairstyles that became very popular during the flapper period. Many Hollywood movie stars wore the latest finger waves which contributed to the popularity and evolution of this style. FINGER WAVING is the shaping or moulding of the hair while wet into “s”-shaped curved undulations with the fingers and comb. These waves when dried without being disturbed will fall into beautiful deep waves. Finger waving differs from marcel waving in that there are no heated irons used on the hair. Not only naturally curly or permanently waved hair can be finger waved, but it is equally successful on straight hair.

Now you know!!

Is it or isn’t it Spring? That is the question!

Well! The daffodils sprang and the crocuses popped their heads out, yey! oh, hold on a minute! Nooo, more snow!

Whilst we are still in winter mode I will take you back to October 2012, to Kate’s wedding, at Pelham House, in Lewes, nr Brighton.

Kate wore a beautifully classic up do, which suited her surroundings and her stunning lace dress.

Thank you Kate for these kind words!

“Just wanted to say thank you again for making my Wedding Day such a wonderful occasion. We had a really fantastic day and it could not have been better.

Having such lovely people around me throughout the morning was a big part of the day. I was so pleased with my hair and Lester loved it.”

Well! that was a busy one!

My first bride was the lovely Linda, with her mum at The Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells

Linda wore her hair in a classically simple French pleat.

Thought I would share this lovely message I received from Linda this morning.

“Hi Liz,
I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU! I was soooo pleased with my wedding hair. Lots of guests paid lovely compliments and it lasted all day without a hair falling out of place. Thank you so much. Linda x”

Little messages like this make it all worthwhile! 🙂

Then!

I shot off to the Grasshopper Inn, Westerham to do Jessica’s bridal hair.

Her mum and bridesmaid too!

Pic’s to follow!
